I'll hit you with a nerdy question. I recently reread the first 60 or so issues of Claremont's X-Men run and I was struck by how different everyone was early on. I don't think I noticed as a kid. They change a lot over that run and of course there are differences now. Who do you see as the most different now from what they started as? Who has changed for the best and who changed for the worst?
there are two characters that come immediately to mind: cyclops and storm. i think both have gone through pretty stupendous arcs, for good and bad.
i’m pretty sure anyone who follows me knows i’m not a scott summers fan. i’ve neverliked the character. too stiff. too much a “company man”. too naive. everyone probably also knows that i’ve hatedthe way cyclops’ character has changed so radically in the past few years. but, the thing is, the change makes sense. he grew up. his eyes opened and he saw what a fucked up world it is and realized that he had to come down off his moral pedestal if he wanted to accomplish anything. i get it. and, in theory, i support it. my problem is that it seemed to happen overnight. that’s not credible. people don’t transition from superman to batman or from lawful good to chaotic good or from martin luther king to malcolm x or however you want to phrase it without, you know, some unique external impetus, some soul searching, and some environmental reinforcement. i didn’t see any of that. scott went from being the most fervent believer in xavier’s dream to brotherhood-lite without questioning a goddamned thing. i still don’t buy it.
ororo has one of the most epic back stories in all of comics. born in harlem! orphaned in cairo! walked across the entire fucking continent of africa! fooled around with a teen-aged t’challa! was worshiped as a goddess! all before she was 20! WHY ISN”T THIS A MOVIE?anyway, despite all that, she was kinda… bland. too staid. too passive. too gentle. but then she met yukio and all that changed.
i wish claremont had been a little braver about their relationship. i wish someone would write a “storm and yukio” mini. WHY ISN”T THIS A MOVIE? whatever. she was never staid or passive again and only gentle when gentleness was called for. and she’s been pretty much everyone’s favorite x-man ever since.
